The Proposal Summary Class 10

English First Flight Chapter-9 The Proposal Summary Class 10

The curtain rises on Lomov, impeccably dressed, as he enters the house of his neighbor, Chubukov. Chubukov is visibly intrigued by Lomov’s attire and inquires about the reason behind it. Lomov reveals that he has come with a specific purpose in mind, piquing Chubukov’s curiosity further. Chubukov, assuming it to be a request for money that Lomov doesn’t intend to return, prepares himself for a refusal. However, to his surprise, Lomov discloses that he has actually come to seek Chubukov’s daughter, Natalya’s, hand in marriage. Excitedly, Chubukov hurries off to summon Natalya.

Lomov, a 35-year-old gentleman prone to palpitations and quick to become agitated, believes that it is the right time for him to marry and feels content with his choice of Natalya. In his eyes, she is of average appearance but possesses the qualities of an honest and caring companion.

When Natalya arrives, Lomov initiates a conversation expressing his gratitude and happiness that their families have maintained a good relationship from the very beginning. As he discusses his land, he inadvertently mentions Oxen Meadows, which was previously a disputed property but now belongs to him. However, Natalya vehemently disagrees, firmly believing that Oxen Meadows rightfully belongs to her family. The disagreement escalates into a heated discussion, with both parties behaving childishly. Just as the argument reaches its peak, Chubukov returns to the scene, inadvertently intensifying the conflict. Shouting and screaming ensue, while Lomov’s heart begins to pound intensely, he experiences a side pull, and his foot goes numb. Eventually, they forcefully expel Lomov from the house, continuing to hurl insults at him.

While venting their frustrations, Chubukov accidentally reveals that Lomov had arrived with a marriage proposal for Natalya. This revelation surprises Natalya, instantly filling her with regret for her behavior. She implores her father to bring Lomov back immediately, while Chubukov curses himself for being the father of a grown-up daughter.

Feeling deeply insulted, Lomov hastily departs from the house. Meanwhile, Chubukov continues to defame the young man, unknowingly disclosing to Natalya the true nature of Lomov’s visit. Upon hearing this, Natalya’s regret intensifies, and she urges her father to retrieve Lomov.

Chubukov rushes out of the house in pursuit of Lomov, and soon the young man returns. Natalya initiates a conversation about their respective dogs, hoping to lighten the atmosphere. However, it quickly spirals into another round of debate between Natalya and Lomov, with Natalya claiming that her dog, Squeezer, is superior to Lomov’s dog, Guess. The argument becomes more heated when Chubukov reenters the scene. All three individuals engage in a quarrel, resulting in Lomov succumbing to yet another bout of palpitations and fainting.

Concerned for his well-being, Natalya implores her father to wake Lomov, expressing her desire to accept his proposal. As Lomov stirs, they offer him water to revive him, and Chubukov subtly places Natalya’s hand over Lomov’s. In the midst of the chaos, they agree to proceed with the marriage. However, the quarrel persists as Natalya remains adamant that Squeezer is superior to Guess. Lomov, unwavering in his stance, refuses to accept that his beloved dog is inferior. The curtain descends on the scene, leaving the characters embroiled in a verbal battle that shows no signs of abating.
